A woman named Emily renewing her driver's license atthe County Clerk's office was asked by the womanrecorder to state her occupation. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself. "What I mean is,"explained the recorder, "do you have a job, or are youjust a ...

    "Of course I have a job," snapped Emily.

"We don't list 'mother' as an occupation ... 'Housewife'covers it," said the recorder emphatically.“我们这里不把‘母亲’看成是一个职业……‘家庭主妇’就可以了。”

I forgot all about her story until one day I found myselfin the same situation, this time at our own Town Hall. The Clerk was obviously a career woman, poised, efficient, and possessed of a high sounding title like, "Official Interrogator" or "Town Registrar." "What is youroccupation?" she probed.

What made me say it, I do not know ... The words simplypopped out. "I'm a Research Associate in the field ofChild Development and Human Relations."

The clerk paused, ballpoint pen frozen in midair, andlooked up as though she had not heard right.

I repeated the title slowly, emphasizing the mostsignificant words. Then I stared with wonder as mypronouncement was written in bold, black ink on theofficial questionnaire.

"Might I ask," said the clerk with new interest, "just whatyou do in your field?"“我能不能问一下,”这名办事员好奇地问,“你在这个领域具体做什么?”

Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice, I heardmyself reply, "I have a continuing program of research, (what mother doesn't), in the laboratory and in the field, (normally I would have said indoors and out). I'm workingfor my Masters, (the whole darned family), and alreadyhave four credits, (all daughters). Of course, the job isone of the most demanding in the humanities, (anymother care to disagree?) and I often work 14 hours aday, (24 is more like it). But the job is more challengingthan most run-of-the-mill careers and the rewards aremore of a satisfaction rather than just money."

There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk'svoice as she completed the form, stood up, andpersonally ushered me to the door.

As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up by myglamorous new career, I was greeted by my labassistants - ages 13, 7, and 3. Upstairs I could hear ournew experimental model, (a 6 month old baby), in thechild-development program, testing out a new vocalpattern.

I felt triumphant! I had scored a beat on bureaucracy! And I had gone on the official records as someone moredistinguished and indispensable to mankind than"just another mother."

Motherhood ... What a glorious career! Especially whenthere's a title on the door.

Does this make grandmothers "Senior ResearchAssociates in the field of Child Development and HumanRelations" and great grandmothers "Executive SeniorResearch Associates"? I think so!!!

I also think it makes Aunts "Associate ResearchAssistants".

    A Million Dollar Lesson

A cab driver taught me a million dollar lesson on customer satisfaction and expectation.

Motivational speakers charge thousands of dollars to impart his kind of training to corporate executives and staff. It cost me a $12 taxi ride.

I had flown into Dallas for the sole purpose of calling on a client. Time was of the essence and my plan included a quick turnaround trip from and back to the airport. A spotless cab pulled up.

The driver rushed to open the passenger door for me and made sure I was comfortably seated before he closed the door. As he got in the driver's seat, he mentioned that the neatly folded Wall Street Journal next to me was for my use. He then showed me several tapes and asked me what type of music I would enjoy.

Well! I looked around for "Candid Camera!" Wouldn't you? I could not believe the service I was receiving! I took the opportunity to say, "Obviously you take great pride in your work. You must have a story to tell

You bet, he replied, "I used to be in Corporate America. But I got tired of thinking my best would never be good enough. I decided to find my niche in life where I could feel proud of being the best I could be. ”

I knew I would never be a rocket scientist, but I love driving cars, being of service and feeling like I have done a full day's work and done it well. I evaluated my personal assets and... wham! I became a cab driver.

One thing I know for sure, to be good in my business I could simply meet the expectations of my passengers. But, to be great in my business, I have to exceed the customer's expectations! I like both the sound and the return of being 'great' better than just getting by on 'average'.

    The Blessing Tree

I had gone into a supervisor's office to talk about a couple of issues that needed to be addressed. She, like all of the men and women in her department, had been through the proverbial "ringer." The stress was so intense, one could almost taste it.

I had been assisting the department during a crunch period of being very short-handed, and was watching everyone get close to burn-out. When I inquired about her state of mind, she confessed that her home life was almost non-existant, because she was "zombieing through the evening". The next words out of her mouth expressed a frustration of my own: "This work is not my gift from God. My family is!"

I had heard of hanging all of one's problems from the office on a "Trouble Tree" while driving home, to be picked up on the way back to the office in the morning, and for a brief second thought about suggesting that scenario.

But what came out was: "Why don't we do something different? Let's have a Blessing Tree. On the way home in the evening, we could pull down a blessing to dwell on a character trait we adore in our spouse, a particular reason we love them, the love they or our children have for us. The list could be endless."

When I tried it on the way home that night, the stress seemed to melt away. There was a "spring in my step" and when I arrived, a smile of joy and contentment was bubbling up from within! For the first time in 2 weeks, I was overjoyed to greet my wife and children!

The Blessing Tree could make a major difference in your evenings, especially after those really tough days.

But your circumstances don’t make you who you are, and no situation lasts forever. If you want success, you need to start living and thinking as if you were successful.

As an introduction to a blog says, life can be poor and life can be lonely, but what we can never lose is the beating heart of life itself.

Everyone is busy these days, driven to get somewhere —but do they know where? Something important falls by the wayside as they rush, and then they begin to complain about a boring and mechanical* life with no vitality or newness, but we are the producers of our own lives. If our lives are poor or lonely, we’ve made them so ourselves, and can change them.

Figure out what you’re really interested in doing, and do it. Call your friends and family every day; go out for walks; go climbing; do some sports. duanwenw.com Eat in clean and quiet restaurants with your best friends, or go to cafes with them to chat whenever you’re in the mood. Arrange your room in the way that pleases you, write down your feelings and experiences, or buy a vase and put some flowers in it. Spend an afternoon reading your favorite magazines, without doing anything else.

Of course, there is a lot to do, but we shouldn’t let our busyness get the better of us. We should try to live for ourselves, like human beings, not like machines.

I want to know if you can be with joy, if you can dance with wildness, and if you can let happiness fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes. duanwenw.com Are you someone who doesn’t care about being careful, being realistic or remembering the limitations of being a human?

It doesn’t interest me if the story you’re telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself and if you can bear the blame of betrayal2 and not betray your own soul.

I want to know if you can be faithful, and therefore trustworthy.I want to know if you can see beauty on the ugliest of days. I want to know if you can live with failure and still stand on the edge of a lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, "Yes!" It doesn’t interest me where you have studied.

I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else fails. I want to know if you can be alone with yourself, and if you truly like the company you keep in your emptiest moments.
